The Spanish Federation of Greyhounds, which was established in 1939, is the main organization for greyhound racing in Spain.1 There are also six regional federations throughout the country.2 All racing is done on straight paths. There are currently no official greyhound racing tracks in Spain.
The Spanish Federation of Greyhounds regulations cover areas including registration requirements, conditions for racing venues and anti-doping policies.3
It appears that a majority of the greyhounds racing in Spain were bred in the country. However, at least some of the greyhounds being used for breeding in Spain came from Ireland. There are several instances of greyhounds born in Ireland who now have Spain listed as their land of standing on greyhound-data.com, an online database maintained by dog racing gamblers.
The theft of racing greyhounds seems to be an issue in Spain. The Spanish Federation of Greyhounds has a separate section on its website dedicated to dog "robbery."4 In 2013 the Spanish Civil Guard conducted an investigation named "Operation Duplicate," which resulted in the arrest of eight people for their involvement in the theft of 29 greyhounds.5 Several of the individuals involved were officials for the Andalusian Federation of Greyhounds.6
There does not appear to be any wagering on greyhound races taking place in Spain.
