On November 16, 2016, the Argentine Senate and Chamber of Deputies passed Law 27.330 which prohibits dog racing of any breed in the country.1 Anyone caught organizing, promoting, facilitating or racing a dog is punishable by up to four years in prison and fines of up to 80,000 pesos.2

However, Law 27.330 does not prohibit dog breeding. According to industry website Greyhound-Data, there are currently 68 galgo (ie. greyhound) breeding kennels in the country.3

One year from the ban, Proyecto Galgo Argentina’s Inez Sanchez claimed that racing had decreased 80 to 90%.4 However, she also claimed an increase in the number of racing participants, or galgueros, who drive to neighboring Chile, Uruguay and Brazil, where there is no type of prohibition on dog racing.5
